Column explains being aware of the demands of some schools for clear book bags for security and safety, in addition to your preference for good backpacks for high school for other uses, such as rolling school backpacks:

After September 11, 2001, increased security has become dominant in many parts of the world. These days safety measures can be as in-depth as physical examination or as simple as introducing a clear backpack policy for schools, companies or sporting venues.
Since 1998, many school districts have instituted a clear backpack policy in their buildings. The policy requires that any backpack carried to class be made of see-through, transparent material. Schools have to take such measures also because of an increasing number of reports on school shootings as well as alcohol and drug use.
Students find it convenient to use a backpack while walking between classes. In that case, according to the above rule, the backpack must be made of mesh or clear plastic so that its contents are seen from one's first look. As opposed to a slower physical search, clear backpacks enable to do a quick search reducing the average time of waiting in line by 50 - 80%.
Regular backpacks are still allowed to be carried in some schools but only in the morning and they must be stored in lockers.
Although many parents and students are frustrated and claim that this is a sheer violation of child privacy, I disagree with them. In my view, such argument is similar to the one that children have an absolute right to privacy when using their PCs connected to Internet. We, parents, and the rest of society are responsible for ensuring safety for our children, that they are protected from themselves and others. We can't give them absolute privacy while they are working through the difficulties and troubles of adolescence.
Probably you heard about tragedies like gun killings at Columbine in 1999 and gunshot suicide committed by a student at Springfield Township High School. And I guess you heard even more about school shootings and children who brought handguns, knives and drugs to their school. All this proves that mandating clear backpacks - though doesn't entirely solve the problem - at least helps to reduce the number of students who bring illegal items into a classroom environment.
Besides, see-through backpacks have some advantages compared to regular packs.
Many clear backpacks have front pockets which include a sleeve for Student ID or plane ticket. That offers the convenience to see one's information (for example at security checkpoints) without the need to remove it from the pack.
See-through backpacks and bags also allow people to stay organized since everything is visible and they always know what's inside without having to open the bag. It saves time. They don't need to dig through their bags to find pens or other small items. They can see where they are.
If we carry regular backpacks, a rainy day or water spilling may soak up books, papers and other supplies inside. Contrary to them, clear backpacks made of vinyl are waterproof which enables to avoid any damages to the storage items.
